Day Programme for Key Stage 2
BRITAIN
SINCE 1930 NEW MILLS AT WAR
A day programme has been designed to make a study of the local area of
New Mills during the Second World War.
The study will meet many of the requirements of the Key Stage 2 History
Curriculum 2000 to develop knowledge, skills and understanding through
a study of the impact of the Second World War on the local area of New
Mills.
The study will investigate the role of the Home Guard, and other defence
and support organisations in New Mills, the air raid, the fund raising
events to raise money to support the war effort, the people who went to
war and never came back and how these people were remembered in memorials
in the town. Children will be taught how to find out about the past using
a variety of sources, buildings, sites, printed documents and accounts,
pictures and photographs and, when possible, people who experienced the
time.
This will be achieved through activities:-
- to locate the sites and nature of war memorials
- to learn something about some of the people remembered there
- to find out how the town supported the war effort
- to find out about the air raid on New Mills
- to find out about local organisation, such as the Home Guard
