Public transport

New Mills Heritage & Information Centre is conveniently located near the Central Railway Station (on the Manchester to Sheffield line), adjacent to the Bus Station. Newtown Station (on the Manchester to Buxton line) is three quarters of a mile away.

Railway services

New Mills is served by frequent direct trains from Manchester Piccadilly, Stockport and Sheffield run by First North Western Trains.

  1. Manchester - Buxton line (via Stockport) for New Mills Newtown.
  2. Manchester -Sheffield (via Marple) for New Mills Central.
  3. The First North Western Trains Hope Valley line trains between Sheffield and Manchester serve Grindleford, Bamford, Hope, Edale, Chinley and New Mills.

Timetables

Derbyshire County Council publishes comprehensive bus/train timetable books for three areas of Derbyshire. The full set covers the whole county, and a new edition of each book is published twice a year.

The Peak District timetable book

This covers the Ashbourne, Buxton, Matlock, Glossop, New Mills, Hope Valley and Derbyshire Dales areas. Provides bus and train information.

The 'Derbyshire Wayfarer'

This is a day rover ticket allowing virtually unlimited bus and train travel throughout Derbyshire for a whole day.

"Derbyshire Wayfarer" Ticket Prices:

  • £7.25 for an Adult (plus one child under 16)
  • £3.65 for a Senior Citizen, a Child under 16, or a dog
  • £12.00 for a Group of up to 2 adults and 3 children

Where to buy "Derbyshire Wayfarer" tickets

You can buy "Derbyshire Wayfarer" tickets in advance, or (subject to opening hours) on the day you wish to travel, from any of these outlets:

  • Tourist Information Centres in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Burton-on-Trent, Buxton, Castleton, Chesterfield, Derby, Edale, Glossop, Hayfield, Matlock, Matlock Bath, New Mills Heritage Centre and Ripley.
  • Bus Enquiry Offices in Sheffield, Chesterfield, Burton-on-Trent, Leek and Macclesfield. · Travel Agents in Long Eaton (Laver Travel) and Uttoxeter (Halls Travel).
  • Public libraries in Alfreton, Belper, Heanor, Ilkeston, Melbourne and Swadlincote.

You can also buy "Derbyshire Wayfarer" tickets on the day of travel from the drivers of these local buses:

  • Barton Buses (including "Rainbow"), Bowers Coaches, Express Motors, First PMT (Services X1 and X18 only), Go Bus, Hulleys, Maynes, Ringwood Coaches, Rossendale Transport (Service 473 only), Stagecoach East Midland, Trent Buses (including "Rainbow", "TransPeak", "Red Arrow", "Black Cat", "Villager", "Ilkeston Flyer", "Spondon Flyer", "Harlequin" and "The Mickleover") and Yorkshire Traction.

These main-line railway stations sell "Derbyshire Wayfarer" tickets on the day of travel:

  • Alfreton, Burton-on-Trent, Buxton, Chesterfield, Derby, Long Eaton, Matlock (Peak Rail Shop), New Mills, Newtown and Sheffield. (Please note that New Mills Newtown ticket offices are open only on Mondays to Fridays, before 10.00 hours.)
  • Nottingham and Beeston stations sell special "Derbyshire Wayfarer" tickets which also include rail travel from those stations to Long Eaton or Langley Mill. These tickets are priced at £9.70 (Adult) and £4.85 (Concessionary). Group tickets are not available from these stations.
